For my next news piece I would like to introduce Jamie Owen, an 18 year old from Carreg y Franc Farm and 2nd year student at Reaseheath College where she is on the Livestock Course.
When I began trying to find my way around websites and social media accounts for The Bryn y Pys Estate, Jamie was the first one to “follow” my early instagram pictures (byp_estate) and the encouragement it gave me when Jamie deftly added me on to her media feed with a flick on her phone was a huge boost!
Social Media is an amazing tool for PR. and educating an increasingly distant general public about farming and food production. Jamie is part of the new generation of women in agriculture unheard of a decade ago. (With the extraordinary exception of Mary Lewis of course who farmed at Argoed Farm for approximately 30 years , way ahead of her time).
Jamie combines her course work with practical farming experience- being regularly assessed by her tutors.
As you can see from the photograph accompaying this ,tractor work is her favourite!
There are also calf rearing duties and silage feeding.All a lot of responsibility for an 18 year old when you are in charge of thousands of pounds worth of machinery.
