In August 2025, 12 acres of woodland poplar were harvested for the timber trade along The Argoed. This was because many of the trees came down due to storm damage and others had reached maturity.
The timber mainly went to Kronospan in Chirk who are a large manufacturer of MDF board.
The area will be replanted with a mix of alder, oak, lime and willow, which will eventually provide competition and canopy against the Himalayan Balsam along the river. Providing wildlife habitat is a valued part of estate management.
The species of trees are dictated by annual flooding of that area.
It was a lengthy extraction because it was long way to the road side for collection, thank you to Mark Owen who farms the fields which were used.
It was the intention to replant this winter, 2025/2026 but the team got held up on other jobs and it became too late, so the replanting will be done in Autumn 2026.
In the past The Bryn y Pys Estate would have processed its own timber at the saw mill which used to be in Peel Close, in the middle of Overton on Dee village, which is where The Estate Office used to be.
